Northern Arizona University

Finding affordable housing anywhere at Northern Arizona University always seems to be a chore, but if you have the right tools you can make the moving process as seamless as possible. These tips should be all you need to help you find your way around Flagstaff and help you save big bucks. Pre-tip A: Don’t be afraid to try something new. Pre-tip B: Keep an open-mind.

Tip 1: Don’t be afraid to go on Craigslist.

People always say, “Don’t use Craigslist, people will try to scam you.” Maybe if you’re buying a car, but when you’re looking to rent a house there isn’t much that they can hide if you ask the right questions. The site has many features to help you limit your search to your surrounding area and even keep the prices within your budget. It is very easy to learn and use on a regular basis. If you make a profile with them, you will also be able to save listings that you are considering for an easy find next time you go searching.

Tip 2: Know what questions to ask.

  • Are utilities included? Or split?
  • Are pets allowed?

Renting an Apartment

  • If you are trying to rent an apartment, will you be on the lease immediately or when the lease is renewed?
  • How will utilities be included? Or split?

Renting a House

  • Does the owner also live in the house?
  • Will you have any other roommates?
  • Will you have to share the fridge with anyone?

Tip 3: Meet people.

You are going to want to get to know people. Especially being in college, you probably aren’t going to be able to afford to live on your own so getting to know your potential roommates is key?

Tip 4: Get your footsteps in.

You should be making your way around town and seeing what areas are right for you. If you don’t feel comfortable living in a very busy area then Downtown Flagstaff is not the place for you. If you want something quiet, but still within walking distance you need to start exploring and taking notes of the areas that you like more than others.

Tip 5: Write everything down.

Make sure that you have all of the information for the places that you really liked. Also, keep a record of places that you didn’t like. This will help you make a more informed decision.
