How to Stay Healthy as a University Student

I totally get it. If you are sick, that means you get to lay in bed, skip class, and eat everything and anything you want to make yourself feel better. No! You should not have to suffer through the six-week dorm cold that either turns into the flu, strep throat, or bronchitis. No one has time to be that sick! Here are some tips to help you stay healthy in university.

1) Hydration

This might seem like a no brainer, but staying hydrated when you are sick or are showing early symptoms is crucial! If you are not drinking enough water, your body will not appreciate that and cause you to become bed ridden for weeks. Try and drink half of your body weight of water, in ounces. This will give your body enough fuel to combat this annoying virus. Aside from good old H20, try drinking Emergency packets. Vitamin C helps so much when dealing with the flu or a common cold especially. Pound these two liquids and you’ll be better in no time!

2) Clean Everything!

This might seem excessive, but wipe down every surface, visible and non visible, in your room. There is no hope in getting healthy again if your dorm room is cluttered with germs. Grab some Clorox wipes or cleansing wipes and get your desk, all handles, sink, shelves, literally everything clean. If your room is spotless, that is one thing in your life putting you closer to becoming spotless yourself! But stay away from the scented ones, those can stink up a small space pretty quickly.

3) Sweat and Shower

Most people don’t know, but working out when you are getting over or catching a sickness is very important! Sweating helps your body rid itself of toxins. Now, we don’t expect to have enough energy to pull ourselves out of bed for a couple of days. But before the week ends, make sure to get in some light to medium sweat action. Then finish up with a steaming hot shower to kill any bacteria and germs. Trust me, you’ll feel loads better! Curing the flu and getting a spring break body, it’s a win-win!

4) Eat from all of the food groups

Pretty self-explanatory, but make sure you are eating a healthy and balanced diet to rid yourself of the bug that’s gotten hold of you! I know cookies and ice cream are known to cure a cold, but only temporarily. Eating enough vegetables, fruits, carbs, fats, and protein will give your body the necessary energy it needs to beat this virus so you won’t be craving being healthy rather than craving sweets!

Overall, getting sick in college is super rough. But following these tips and talking to your local campus doctor or community pediatrician will be very helpful as well! Stay healthy!
